Workshop: What’s YOUR Stressor, and How Can We Combat the Negative Effects

Stress Has on Our Bodies and Minds?

Over seventy-three staff members started the New Year with an exciting workshop featuring four guest speakers. Our first speaker was Dr. Cindy Bergeman from the University of Notre Dame Department of Psychology who gave a talk on “How Stress Gets Under the Skin: Implications for Health and Well Being. Next, Chef Steve Stogdill from Victorian Pantry presented ideas for healthy eating and provided a few samples for all of us to try! Then Dr. Mark Lindholm from Natural Family Health Chiropractic, presented “The Chiropractic Health Paradigm; Benefits from Using Chiropractic and Massage for Whole Body Health and Improved Quality of Life.” His colleague Melanie Fair presented “Essential Oils 101; How Do Essential Oils Work to Calm and Relax the Body.” Last, Fitness Coordinator Tabbitha Ashford from REC Sports talked about the importance of excercise and provided information on the various programs and fitness classes offered by REC Sports.

After the workshop we enjoyed a Mexican buffet lunch and handed out several door prizes!

Fall 2015 Tour

This year the College of Arts & Letters staff went on a guided architectural walking tour in downtown South Bend. The day started at The Chicory Café where 29 staff members enjoyed beignets and coffee, all of which were provided by the Dean's Office.

Next we met outside the American Trust Place building for a fun and informative tour of some of South Bend's landmark buildings. We learned many facts about each building's history as well as their present day use. Our tour guide, Steve, was extremely friendly, funny, and informative, which made the 90 minute tour go by way too fast!

2015 Summer Trip to St. Patrick's Park

st

The 2015 summer trip to St. Patrick's Park was held on Thursday, June 4th. The day began at 10:00am with a canoe trip down the St. Joseph River. Twenty-four staff members enjoyed the canoe ride and saw numerous turtles and blue herons. We even saw a man playing beautiful folklore music on a wooden flute!

After the canoe trip we were joined by another seventeen staff members for a catered lunch. Next we went on a guided hike inside the park. On our hike we stopped at The Manion Cabin and learned about some of the history of the park.  One of the higlights during our hike was that we saw an osprey nest.

January 8, 2015 Workshop Glass Painting

The January 2015 Workshop was held in the Gold Room of the North Dining Hall. Despite the frigid temperatures, approximately 30 staff members attended the breakfast, glass painting, and lunch. Each staff member was given two glasses to paint (wine or pilsner). Thanks to Stefanie Buysse, business owner of art + elements, who gave us all tips on creating our own unique glassware.
